How many times have you heard that communication is key to preventing the break up of a relationship? The first thing one might think about when thinking of communication is talking. Much of what communication is, however, is listening. If there is only talk and no understanding, it is difficult to ever get a point across from either side to either side. While listening may seem like a very small, even trivial part of being a couple, it is so very important to making a loved one feel loved and like what they have to say is important. There are several different benefits to being a good listener in any romance. By being a good listener you can show respect, be more approachable, and better understand his or her point of view.

The first benefit to listening to your mate is that you show respect by taking the time to hear what they have to say. The simple fact that you pay attention to his or her feelings goes so far in helping to make the relationship work. If you listen and make an effort to help him or her with the concerns they may have, this makes that person feel like their feelings are being taken into account. Just feeling like your fears and ideas are being taken into consideration is a great way to make a person feel like you truly do care for them.

Another benefit to listening in any relationship is that this makes you more approachable. Many times, if irrational reactions are what a spouse or significant other encounters in times of hardship, communication is thwarted. By being willing to listen to what the other person has to say, you become more approachable in the way that you will hear objectively what they have to say and react appropriately. This makes it much calmer and easier when things do not go exactly as planned in life. It also helps the other spouse to be more comfortable with sharing his or her feelings.

One final benefit of hearing what your loved one has to say is you can better understand what he or she is feeling about a situation. Not only does listening help someone to understand what the other person in the relationship is feeling, it can also help them to know why they are feeling that way. When this is discovered, it is much easier to know how to help the person feel better about the situation. If no one knows how the other person is feeling, it is very difficult to know what to do as a solution to the problem.

In the end, it is such a positive thing to not only listen to what your significant other has to say, but to actually hear what they are saying. If there is a problem in the relationship, the best chance to solve any issues is to listen to the types of feelings that are happening and to look for the best solution to any problems that may exist. Benefits of this are showing respect to your partner, appearing more approachable, and understanding what he or she is really feeling.
