Lions, Tigers and Meditation Music...Oh My!

David T.

Listening to music is something that many people don't really give any thought to- they just do it. Maybe while driving down the road, cleaning the house, or washing the dishes, music serves to create entertainment outside a fairly mundane activity. Others might prefer to sit down and give their full attention to the music being played, whether Beethoven or Queen. If you give music your full attention- especially music that you like- you might notice that you cannot help but appreciate the complexity (or simplicity) of the artistry that is poured into making that music. Creating harmonious sounds- or delightful discord- is something that many cultures have focused on for many years now. New age music is simply the next step in a long line of intentional, conscious music.

Using music as a tool is a very different thing than just listening to music...or is it? Think about your favorite song, the way you can get completely lost in that song, thinking of nothing else. Or perhaps you enjoy the way that some music gently leads your mind to a calm, soft place, where your inclination is simply to settle into your seat and just be. How different is that, really, from using meditation music to help guide your mind through a meditation? The only difference, really, is that in the example of using meditation music to guide the mind, the focus is intentional. The point, however, is that it is natural and instinctive for the mind to do just that in the first place.

Another place you might find that music is similarly helpful is in yoga. Yoga music is a wonderful way to guide a class to breathing and practicing in unison, as well as in a personal practice. When practicing on your own, it can help to have music that motivates you and also that establishes a rhythm that can be followed throughout the practice. Of course, some people just like having nice background noise while they are doing yoga, and that's just fine too. Just as you can find many different aspects of yoga that are enjoyable, so can you find different ways in which to enjoy yoga music.

Obviously, there are a variety of depths that one can take their use of music. From the surface layer of mood music to the deeper layers of music that is followed during meditation with the intention of allowing the music to create the journey, all uses are right and legitimate. If you've been looking for something new to add into your life but aren't sure what it is, why not make that something new music? There are certainly more genres and artists out there than you can shake a stick at, and you're bound to find something that really works for you. Listen to some invigorating music in the morning and calming music in the evening- it is sure to make quite a difference in your day.
