HD or high-def is what everyone wants when it comes to hooking up that new flat screen TV. So what is available as far as DIRECTV HD in today’s competitive market.

In 2007, DIRECTV made a public announcement that by the end of the year they would have over 100 HD channels. While they came up a little shy, (about 92 at the end of 2007) DIRECTV bypassed Dish Network and all other cable television operators in the amount of HD programming available to customers.

So what HD programming options can DIRECTV offer you? Of course, all of the popular cable networks are available in HD including HBO, TNT, ESPN and Showtime. Many specialty channels are now in HD such as the History channel and HGTV.

DIRECTV also offers fifteen Pay-Per-View Movie channels, so plenty of fresh, new entertainment options are out there. Local channels in HD are also accessible in most markets. As of January, 2008 DIRECTV offers local channel HD broadcasts in 74 cities, representing 75% of US television households. This number should continue to increase through the year, so if local HD is not available to you, it should be shortly.

What sort of equipment is needed for HD with DIRECTV? First, a high-definition television is required, so make sure when buying your new TV, it is HD ready. Next, either an HD DVR or HD receiver is needed from DIRECTV. Finally, if you’ve had DIRECTV for some time, you may need a different satellite dish. Check with DIRECTV to see if your dish is HD compatible.

How much does DIRECTV charge for HD? Currently, the HD package is currently priced at $9.99 per month. DIRECTV recently created the HD Extra Pack, a new premium service of HD networks, available for an additional $4.99 per month.

With nearly 100 channels, DIRECTV currently provides the most HD for your money. New satellite television customers can save hundreds the first with the latest DIRECTV promotions.
