Dictionary of the Sexy Flip Flop

So how many kinds of flip flops are there anyway? We've all sported the shoes at some point, either at the beach, or around the pool, but do any of us really understand the full scope of the term, flip flop? In its simplest form, the flip flop shoe can be defined as a backless, generally foam rubber sandal held to the toe by way of a thong. The shoe can manifest in a multitude of different forms, including designer flip flops, sexy flip flops and embellished flip flops. The word itself is actually an example of one of those irritating little English terms we were forced to learn our freshman year of high school: onomatopoeia. For the laymen, that means that the word mimics the sound it describes. But enough about shoes.

Limber members of society might find it interesting to know that a flip flop can be a backward somersault or handspring. For example, if one were to assemble some sort of gymnastics routine, you might opt to do something along the lines of a round-off flip-flop back-tuck tumbling pass. The less limber members of society will probably just watch you from the sidelines.

Gymnastics not your bag? How about politics, because it's got flip flops too. For example, in United States politics, a flip flop could be described as a sudden real or apparent change in policy opinion, that's made to look as though both positions are consistent with each other. Generally employed prior to an election to increase a candidate's popularity, the technique can also be a cause for criticism, and mud slinging. This phenomena can be witnessed in many high schools, where flip floppers are viewed with a great deal of hostility, due to their wishy-washy nature. Put another way, a flip flopper is an individual who doesn't know who they are, so they try to subscribe to multipe stereotypes.

If you're planning to take the old big rig out for a spin anytime in the near future, you might benefit from knowing some CB flip flop slang. In trucker terminology, the flip flop is the return trip. It can also mean that you're about to pull a U-turn. And while we're on the subject of electrical gadgets, a flip flop can be an electronic circuit or mechanical device that has two stable states and can be switched between the two. Early computers used flip flops as their memory storage units. But that's getting a bit technical.

So if you hear someone drop the term flip flop, don't automatically assume they're talking about the flimsy footwear we all adore so much. There's more to flip flops than designer flip flops, sexy flip flops, and embellished flip flops. Just keep your flip flop dictionary close at hand, and you should be able to navigate your way out of most any flip flop related predicament.
