Always Useful: The Kitchen Apron

David T.

There are some things about which your mother was right, and there is nothing you can do about it. This could be anything from how important it is to wear a kitchen apron, to the value of cleaning up as you go, rather than waiting until you've finished and are left with an even bigger mess to clean up. You may have noticed that lately, cooking aprons have come back into style, especially in the form of vintage aprons. What's a girl to do without an apron? Well, ruin her clothes, apparently.

You see, cooking is actually messy business, and there are many things that might stain. Not all stains come out in the wash very easily, and some don't come out at all if you don't take immediate action to fix them. Say you're having a nice glass of red wine while preparing dinner, but suddenly, the cat runs through the room with a bird in its mouth and suddenly, you're wearing your wine instead of drinking it. Not all houses have a handy bottle of Wine-Away, and of course, if you take the time to chase the cat out the back door with its "present" then the stain has set and you'll only be wearing that shirt to work in the yard.

Not a drinker? Well, how about this- an oil stain, if you don't notice it before you put your clothing in the wash, can become quite permanent. In fact, if it dries before you can treat it, you might have lost that piece of clothing for good. Grape and tomato juices can also leave fun stains, and if you thought about it, you could probably come up with several other ways to ruin your clothes while cooking. While it's very unlikely, your clothes could even be burned while you cook! Hopefully your kitchen experience is flame-free, but you never know...

While a kitchen apron might not protect you from burning your dinner (or your house down) it will protect your clothing from splashes, spills and unfortunate flying hunks of tomato. Never fear, aprons come in all different shapes and sizes. If you get this image of an industrial apron, forget everything you know and start checking out the fabulous style of hostess aprons! For the guy in your life, there are all sorts of manly aprons, which he can wear while grilling and doing other manly things, such as cooking meat or watching the game between checking on the burgers.
